New Drupal Mixpanel module released to track learning analytics
Eduglu's goal is to provide a rich collaborative learning environment for peers and powerful tools to help the 21st century teacher quickly understand who needs help and how best to help them.
As part of that goal, we've been investing heavily in creating a learning analytics system for Eduglu. Our hope is that our learning analytics system will help you better understand your students so you can better help them.
To do this, we've build a Drupal module that integrates with the popular analytics service Mixpanel.
Eduglu Alpha 8 Released
I'm pleased to announce the unveiling of the latest version of Eduglu. The focus for this release has been on polishing the UI. The Discussion app got a major revision with a focus on making listings of new discussions simpler and tighter. You should find Eduglu cleaner and easier to use.
Editors rule the world
Or to be more precise, those who rule the world are those who can answer the question, "what's really important?"
Jason Fried from 37Signals wrote a great post the other day on his company's blog on "The class I'd like to teach."
He described the class:
It would be a writing course. Every assignment would be delivered in five versions: A three page version, a one page version, a three paragraph version, a one paragraph version, and a one sentence version.
Eduglu, Roadmaps, platforms, and killer apps
Killer platforms need killer apps. A great platform by itself isn't that interesting or useful. It takes killer apps to attract customers and define the platform.
What is a learning community?
The following is a guest post from my talented friend Jason McDonald. Jason blogs at http://jkmcdonald.com/blog
Jason McDonald is an instructional designer, academic researcher, executive producer, philosopher of creativity, rich media consultant, and design thinker, all rolled into one. He is currently the director of the LDS Motion Picture Studio, in Provo, UT, overseeing the production of educational and motivational films, distance learning courses, instructional media objects, satellite-based training seminars, and other interactive media. Jason’s Ph.D. is from Brigham Young University’s Department of Instructional Psychology and Technology. His research interests include innovation, design process, reflective practice, and the philosophy of design.
About seven years ago my back went bad. I spent a few weeks standing literally at an angle, even the most basic motions were incredibly painful, and after a period of treatment I was forbidden from working until the doctor noticed improvement. One night a man in my neighborhood, who had heard about my condition, came to visit just because he felt empathy for my suffering and he wanted to do what he could to make me feel better.

Conversation
From British political philosopher Michael Oakeshott:
Conversation is not . . . a contest where a winner gets a prize, . . . it is an endless, unrehearsed, intellectual adventure in which in imagination we enter a variety of modes of understanding the world and ourselves. And, we are not disconcerted by the differences, or dismayed by the inconclusiveness of it all.
I really like that. Good conversation is good for the soul.
Notes from "The Future of Teaching & Learning" conference -- Howard Rheingold's keynote
First Keynote from Howard Rheingold.
Started teaching a digital journalism class then moved on to teaching digital literacy. When first started teaching classrooms, thought about how to use online media to overcome disadvantages of teaching in classrooms namely a) not all teachers good at speaking extemporously and b) classroom learning militates against thoughtfulness, can't share thought that occurs an hour after class.
First started experimenting with using online tools for learning in 1995.
